CHOW: FULL BELLY DELI

Written by Paul Raymore
Tuesday, 18 March 2008

The Space
Tucked into the front of the building next to Sierra College in the Pioneer Commerce Center, the Full Belly Deli is the perfect place to grab a sandwich to go for busy professionals, or linger over a bowl of fresh-made soup. Inside, a long counter and a couple of high tables provide seating for 12 or so, and free wi-fi and a flat-screen TV in the corner offer entertainment opportunities to those eating alone.

During the warmer months, the outdoor patio offers tables for around 20 guests and allows owners Tom Marrin and Eric Barton to break out the barbecue and cook up tri-tip, smoked turkey and more.

The Food
It’s always awesome when a chef opens a deli because you get fine dining attention to detail and flavor for the price of a to-go sandwich. Such is the case at the Full Belly Deli, as co-owners Tom Marrin and Eric Barton both have catering backgrounds, with Marrin most recently serving as a chef for various Tahoe Mountain Club properties.

“We kind of felt there was something missing in Truckee. There wasn’t a place for a good deli sandwich and we though we could do that,” Marrin said of their motivation for opening the deli.

Patrons can expect a tough choice when it comes to deciding which of the 13 gourmet sandwiches to choose from the regular menu (varying from subs to more traditional deli sandwiches to hot-pressed selections). And regulars can always go with the daily special, which Marrin and Barton try to vary daily so they can always offer something new.

The sandwiches start with fresh bread baked in-house daily, with choices such as jalapeno cheese, blue cheese, and parmesan oregano in addition to traditional styles. Add meats from the Carson City Sausage Factory and locally-sourced (when possible) vegetables and cheeses, and you’ve got a sandwich that almost looks too good to eat... almost.

Not in the mood for a sandwich? Try the house-made soup of the day, one of the three salad choices, or one of the fresh-baked cookies (which are so big they’re almost a meal in and of themselves).

And don’t forget breakfast: bagels with butter, almond butter or cream cheese; breakfast burritos or sandwiches with eggs, cheese and your choice of bacon or Black Forest ham; and an assortment of breakfast pastries and breads.

The Drinks
Fresh-brewed coffee and espresso drinks from Coffee Connection are a great way to start the morning or get that afternoon buzz to make it through the day. A nice selection of juices, energy drinks, iced teas, bottled water and soft drinks round out the drink selection.

Gotta Try
The Breakfast Burrito already has a loyal following in the morning time, and come lunch, the Southwest Chicken sandwich — chicken breast, avocado, pepper jack cheese and chipotle aioli layered on foccacia and pressed until it’s melty — is the most often requested sandwich on the menu for good reason.

Tidbit
Both Marrin and Barton have a background in catering — they met while working for the Tahoe Mountain Club (Marrin as a chef, Barton as the catering manager) — and are available for parties big or small. “We’re ready to take on almost any catering gig from office parties to high-end weddings,” Barton said.

Also, frequent customers should pick up a sandwich punch-card that pays out with a free sandwich after 10 are purchased.

Price Range
Coffee drinks from $1.25 to $4.50. Breakfast items from $2.50 to $6.50. Salads from $6 to $8. Sandwiches from $7 to $8.
